UKAS

UKAS is the UK’s accreditation body, recognised by the government, to assess against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services, collectively known as conformity assessment bodies. Accreditation is a service of public interest, representing the last authoritative level of control of conformity assessment. It provides the basis for recognition of conformity assessment bodies, attesting conformity to standards or requirements of, for example, European Directives and Regulations. 

UKAS is a scientific and technical organisation that plays a key role as part of the UK’s quality infrastructure and provides the accreditation services needed by consumers, businesses and government. It delivers the confidence that buyers and sellers need to trust the reliability and competence of their (trading) partners, and in the information, they provide on the properties of goods and services placed on the market.  

UKAS has both a national and international role in facilitating trade and underpinning trust, confidence and credibility in products, services, schemes and personnel operating in both the private and public sectors. 

In its Economics of Accreditation report, researchers at Birkbeck University put the value of accreditation’s contribution to UK plc at over £600m per year.
