No, that's not the point at all. None of these documents are secret or
private. The ONLY point here is that the draft standards have to be
PURCHASED, because they are owned by the ISO organization, are
copyrighted and are not materials that are "in the public domain". That's
all. Think them as "books" and ISO as their "author". It's not a
"moral", "ethical" or even an "environmental" issue.

I agree that copyright is not the subject of this list, but the issue
was raised and it's important for everyone to know that *all* ISO
standards and draft standards are copyrighted and have to be purchased
from ANSI or ASQC in this country.

The ISO 14000 standards consist of about 20 documents in various stages
of preparation. 14001 & 14004 (relating to EMS), 14010 & 14011 & 14012
(relating to the auditing requirements for the EMS) are now Draft
International Standards (DIS) and out for final balloting.

All documents at the committee draft level and on are available for
purchase. I have found ASTM to be a convenient place for purchasing.
They have just moved and the new phone number is: 610-832-9585. They can
fax you information on the titles available and the costs.

I've just added a resume to the QUALITY.ORG resume base (see
"Employment" in the homepage) of someone who is extremely proficient
and well-qualified in ISO14000 areas, especially that of nuclear waste.

If any of you have or know of any positions for someone of this
caliber, please contact her directly. Her information is at the top of
her resume.

Thanks.

Following are the CORRECT instructions for subscribing, unsubscribing
and posting to the ISO14000 list. If you tell anyone about this list,
be SURE to also provide them with the instructions, so we don't have
to suffer those interminable "subscribe me" messages erroneously sent
to the LIST. QUALITY.ORG's lists are all served by a piece of List
Management software called Majordomo. As a result, *ALL* messages
having to do with getting onto or off of a list *MUST* be directed
ONLY to the autoserver located at this address:

	majordomo@quality.org

To subscribe or unsubscribe: address your message ONLY to the
autoserver at:

	majordomo@quality.org

To Subscribe: The ONLY text in the BODY of your message needs to be:

	subscribe iso14000

To unsubscribe: The ONLY text in the BODY of your message needs to be:

	unsubscribe iso14000

ONLY postings to everyone on the list are to be sent to:

	iso14000@quality.org

Please SAVE the above for future reference!

If you can't figure it out, DON'T email the LIST. If you have ALREADY
tried to subscribe through Majordomo and have received an error message
from the QUALITY.ORG system, then send your questions *and* a COMPLETE
copy of the error message (including the headers) to the QUALITY.ORG
System Administrator at this address ONLY:

	help@quality.org

Note that if you rant and rave about it, you're likely to get a
response in kind. So, try to be courteous. Don't assume that he knows
you've been having problems, because he doesn't. Try to make this as
non-stressful for everyone concerned.

Okay?

- ------------

Hello!

After almost unanimously positive feedback from cybersouls such as
yourselves, I have just created a new, moderated but "unfocused" public
email discussion list for Quality-related subjects, those that don't
have enough of a routine following to justify a list solely devoted to
that subject. This is for those times when you have a question to ask
that you *know* is Quality-related, but don't know *who* to ask, when
you *know* that it's unrelated to TQM, ISO9000, ISO25 or....any of the
myriad of other specific Quality topics that currently support focused
lists.

The name of the list is: "NoCows". The reference is to there being "no
sacred (quality) cows" that we can't talk about here. But, keep in mind
that the overall topic will still remain QUALITY. Hence, the list is
moderated to keep out irrelevant topics--like politics, astronomy and
other stuff, unless--in the Moderator's sole opinion--there is a clear
and direct relation to the practice or perception of Quality.

To receive the information file on this list (which will also tell you
how to subscribe to it, posting guidelines and other cool information),
address an email message to:

	majordomo@quality.org

with ONLY the following text in the BODY of your message:

	info NoCows

(It's not case-sensitive, so all lowercase will work too.)

You can also retrieve the file through gopher, ftp or WWW here at
QUALITY.ORG. The ftp directory location is:

   ftp://ftp.quality.org/pub/qc/lists/nocows.list.FAQ

It's in the "Email Lists" sections of both the gopher and WWW sites.

Enjoy!
Bill

Subject: REMINDER!

This is just to remind you that no one who is not already subscribed
to a list here is permitted by the system to post to that list. That
means, for example, if you are not a subscriber to the NoCows list,
you cannot post to it. (Even if you could, it would gain you no
further knowledge, since you wouldn't be able to read the responses,
if any.)

This policy is in place to reduce as much as possible the risk of the
lists being "spammed" by outsiders mass-mailing irrelevant materials
to the lists. This will become increasingly important in the coming
year as the political campaigns heat up and those from various
political points will want to universally broadcast their particular
screeds. There are plenty of lists already for non-Quality stuff, so
we've tried to reasonably assure that not much will get through on the
QUALITY.ORG lists. We expect the subscribers to each of the lists to
police and censor themselves, assuring that THEY do not post
irrelevant topical materials to their lists. At the sole discretion of
the List Administrator--on unmoderated lists, or the List
Moderator--for the moderated lists, penalties for violating this
policy may escalate all the way up to permanent banishment from the
lists on this system. Most times, you'll get a warning from me--in
addition to whatever flames your fellow subscribers may desire to
visit upon you.

Okay, that's about it for this diatribe. To recap:

1. If you don't subscribe to it, you can't post to it.
2. Stick to whatever the subject matter is of the list you're posting
to, eg. if it's the ISO25 list, stick to ISO25 matters, etc.

Regards.
Bill

Subject: ISO 14000 Perceptions?

Do you have a moment to contribute to the base understanding of the
perceptions of the Environmental Management System ISO 14000?

For an upcoming paper, I am researching the opinions of various groups toward
the ISO 14000, and would be very interested in hearing your opinion
concerning the following four questions.

For those who are kind enough to reply, I will mail you back the compiled
results of this survey.

1. What do you feel are the benefits and disadvantages of implementing the
ISO 14000 Environmental Management system within your or your client’s
organization?

2. What do you feel are the benefits and disadvantages of having the
organization become ISO 14000 certified?

3. What do you feel could be done to improve the acceptance by industry of
the ISO 14000 Environmental Management System?

4. Do you plan on implementing the ISO 14000 Environmental Management System
standard and if so when.

Please indicate what industry you are primarily involved in. (service,

At present I see no need for us to go ISO 14000. We are a smaller company so
it is more economical to go to outside services for environmentally related
testing, regulatory issues and general contract work to resolve disposal
