Auditing Buffs, I have been paying some attention to the TickIT requirements development and certification criteria. Now I heard a rumor that there is some domestic work on certified 9001 auditing for software. The rumor I heard was that a proposal for a domestic certified quality systems auditors was submitted to the RAB, and was denied. Is this true? What do you all know about this realm? But, that was fortuitous, 'cuz I can answer your question: The reason is that all the lists at casti.com, the parent domain of QUALITY.ORG, were spammed by the person who distributed that message. As a public list, there was nothing we could have done about it before the fact. We have, however, taken the after-the-fact measure of turning on the "subscriber only" flag, which means that ONLY subscribers can now post to the QUALITY.ORG lists. This will not prevent a *subscriber* from spamming, but we hope they have sense enough not to annoy their peers. So, even if you are a subscriber at ONE address, the system software will now throw away any posts you attempt from any other address, as it will not see you as a subscriber. Unfortunately, with software, we can't have it both ways, ie. no unlimited access for subscribers either, from anywhere. Short of turning ALL lists into moderated ones, this is the best we can do. And, no, we are most definitely *NOT* going to turn every list into a moderated one. I don't have enough hours in my day to moderate the ONE list that I read every message for now. So, folks, you need to disabuse yourself of the notion that someone else is responsible for you not having to learn how to use your email "delete" key. If you don't like the pieces of mail you get, delete 'em. No need to get angry or tense or abusive. Just throw 'em away. Pretty simple. Regards. Greta, I know of no difference per TickIT requirements or training. From a practical perspective, we're talking 9001 done by auditors who have industry experience and software focused auditor training. The reasoning behind the initiative was the disappointment in auditees when encountering butter auditors instead of software auditors during registration audits. When I lead the ISO implementation effort at Internationl Computers Limited (ICL) in 1990, we had a sizable software and hardware development function. We achieved 9001 registration in October of 1990. The auditors who performed the assessment later became TickIT qualified. We noticed no difference in their behavior, i.e., less flexibility, etc. We eventually converted over to TickIT, but it was more of an adminstrative exercise than anything else. From my perspective as a quality system implementor and as an auditor (On occasion, I do contract audits for a registrar), I see no difference other than the chances of getting an auditor who knows a bit about software is greatly increased. My 2 cents..... PLATFORM: DOS-based PCs DAMAGE: When the INSTALL.EXE program is executed, most files on the users C: drive are deleted. SOLUTION: See the description below _______________________________________________________________________________ VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT: Users who download the AOLGOLD.ZIP or INSTALL.EXE trojaned programs, unpack, and execute them may destroy files on their DOS C: drive. _______________________________________________________________________________ Information on the AOLGOLD Trojan Program AOLGOLD Trojan ============== The AOLGOLD Trojan program was recently discovered on America Online (AOL). Notice about the Trojan has been circulated to all America Online subscribers. Notice about the Trojan and a copy of the Trojan program were supplied to CIAC by Doug Bigelow, who is on the staff of America Online. Apparently, an e-mail message is being circulated that contains an attached archive file named AOLGOLD.ZIP. A README file that is in the archive describes it as a new and improved interface for the AOL online service. Note that there is no such program as AOLGOLD. Also, simply reading an e-mail message or even downloading an included file will not do damage to your machine. You must execute (or run) the downloaded file to release the Trojan and have it cause damage. If you unzip the archive, you get two files: INSTALL.EXE and README.TXT. The README.TXT file again describes AOLGOLD as a new and improved interface to the AOL online service. The INSTALL.EXE program is a self-extracting ZIP archive. When you run the install program, it extracts 18 files onto your hard drive: MACROS.DRV VIDEO.DRV INSTALL.BAT ADRIVE.RPT SUSPEND.DRV ANNOY.COM MACRO.COM SP-NET.COM SP-WIN.COM MEMBRINF.COM DEVICE.COM TEXTMAP.COM HOST.COM REP.COM EMS2EXT.SYS EMS.COM EMS.SYS README.TXT The file list includes another README.TXT file. If you examine the new README.TXT file, it starts out with "Ever wanted the Powers of a Guide" and continues with some crude language. The README.TXT file indicates that the included program is a guide program that can be used to kick other people off of AOL. If you stop at this point and do nothing but examine the unzipped files with the TYPE command, your machine will not be damaged. The following three files contain the Trojan program: MACROS.DRV VIDEO.DRV INSTALL.BAT The rest of the files included in the archive appear to have been grabbed at random to simply fill up the archive and make it look official. The Trojan program is started by running the INSTALL.BAT file. The INSTALL.BAT file is a simple batch file that renames the VIDEO.DRV file to VIRUS.BAT and then runs it. VIDEO.DRV is an amateurish DOS batch file that starts deleting the contents of several critical directories on your C: drive, including: c:\ c:\dos c:\windows c:\windows\system c:\qemm c:\stacker c:\norton It also deletes the contents of several other directories, including those for several online services and games, such as: c:\aol20 c:\prodigy c:\aol25 c:\mmp169 c:\cserve c:\doom c:\wolf3d When the batch file completes, it prints a crude message on the screen and attempts to run a program named DoomDay.EXE. Bugs in the batch file prevent the DOOMDAY.EXE program from running. Other bugs in the file cause it to delete itself if it is run from any drive but the C: drive. The programming style and bugs in the batch file indicates that the Trojan writer appears to have little programming experience. RECOVERY: - --------- **WARNING** Do not copy any files onto your hard disk before trying to recover your hard drive. The files are deleted with the DOS del command, and can be recovered with the DOS undelete command. The files are still on your disk, only the directory entries have been removed. If you copy any new files onto your hard disk, they will likely be written over the deleted files, making it impossible to recover the deleted files. If you have delete protection installed on your system, recovery will be relatively easy. If not, the DOS undelete command can be used, but you will have to supply the first letter of each file name as it is recovered. In many cases, you will probably want to restore the directories by reinstalling them from the original installation disks, but do that last. You must recover any unreplaceable files first using undelete and then replace any others by copying or reinstalling them from the distribution disks. To recover the system: 1. Boot the system with a clean, locked floppy containing the recovery program for the recovery files you have installed, or the DOS UNDELETE.EXE program if you do not have recovery files installed. 2. Type the VIRUS.BAT file to get a list of the directories the Trojan tried to delete. Ignore any directories that don't exist on your machine. 3. Run the recovery program and recover your files. You may have to help it find the recovery files, such as MIRROR, which will be in the root directory. You may have to recover the MIRROR file first and then use it to recover the other files. If you are using only the DOS undelete command, type: undelete directory where directory is the name of the directory to examine. To undelete the files in the dos directory, use: undelete c:\dos The undelete program will present you with a list of deleted files with the first letter replaced with a question mark. Without delete protection, you will have to supply this letter in order to undelete the file. 4. After you have restored as many files as you want or can using the UNDELETE command, replace any others by reinstalling them using the original installation disks. What do you all know about this realm? > Dave Dave, In short, SQSR is dead. It was a program started in 1992 and sponsored by ANSI/ASQC to determine whether a software specific scheme should be developed in the US similar to TickIT. The proposed program would have been compatible with TickIT and would have been OPTIONAL to US companies if they wanted it. A guide was produced by the committee. I was editor for the guide. I believe you can still obtain it from ITAA. It's a good deal at $25 because you get a copy of 9000-3:1991 embedded within. It has a comprehensive section on how to implement 9001 in software environs (Supplier's chapter) as well as other goodies (Registrar Interview Checklist, etc). Call ITAA's hotline at (703) 284-5321. Although the program was killed by industry outcry, I believe that if the public understood what the program was all about they would have given it more consideration. There was a determined effort by some of the big guys to eliminate the scheme. I think it's kind of funny when you think about it. Kill the US program, but continue to offer TickIT in the US with no other alternative. Talk about a captured market........ There is another committee that was formed to investigate the issue further. I believe it is called SWIQ. Not sure where they are on the issue. The key to TickIT and other industry specific initiatives is: Do third party registrar audits add value? I just finished a paper entitled "Third-Party Registrars' Audits - For Better or For Worse". It will be presented at ASQC's 5th Annual Quality Audit Conference in Kansas City, in Feb. of 1996. Maybe I'll see you there..... MISSION Our mission is to: identify and understand user needs in the field of quality management; develop standards that respond effectively to user needs, support implementation of these standards; and facilitate meaningful evaluation of the resulting implementations using the ISO process to achieve international consensus, and compatibility with other ISO/IEC management standards. ISO/TC 176 KEY STRATEGIES 1. Provide for a clear understanding, of the role of quality in relation to the management (leading and operating) of an organization, and the application of related concepts and principles; 2. Minimize proliferation within the ISO 9000 family of standards. 3. Minimize proliferation of standards in the field of quality management developed externally to TC 176; 4. Ensure the integrity of the ISO 9000 family of standards and provide for the integrity of their implementation and evaluation of their implementation; 5. Maximize usefulness of the ISO 9000 family of standards, facilitating effective implementation together with other ISO/IEC management system standards, using a joint and cooperative approach with the other TCs involved. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ISO/TC 176/N 243R 1995-11-04 PROPOSED BY ISO/TC 176 PLENARY DRAFT YEAR 2000 FAMILY The 1994 ISO 9000 family has been established as a basic system, which includes a significant investment and is beneficial to participating organizations. As ISO/TC 176 visions its future, there is a clear need to simplify, consolidate, and integrate the product line, with minimum disruption to the established usefulness. The new product line is being developed systematically, ensuring acceptability at each major stage. To accomodate this, the development process that is being followed is * product line definition * development of specifications * review the need for, and process new work items * standards development * publication as international standards * promotion and implementation. ISO 9000 (formerly ISO 8402): Concepts and Terminology ISO 9001: Requirements for quality assurance | Note: the primary goal of ISO 9001 is to a consistent provide confidence, as a result of pair of demonstration, in product conformance to international established requirements. standards | ISO 9004: Guidance for quality management systems Note: the primary role of ISO 9004 is to achieve benefits for all stakeholder groups through sustained customer satisfaction. ISO 10011: Guidelines for auditing quality management systems. TR1000x: Technical Report or Brochure "Selection and use" TR1000x: Technical Report or Brochure "Quality principles and their application to management practices" (2nd edition of material that will be published in 1996) This product line will be supported by additional documents, as the need arises. The numbers 9002, and 9003 will be available as placeholders, should the need arise for contractual requirements having a more focused scope, than ISO 9001. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ You can hee-haw and joke about the committee *finally* getting around to serving the customer and following their own writings. But the fact is, they are beginning to function as a quality organization. Rather than condemn the committee, I believe we should provide positive reinforcement. Let your friends on the committee and its subcommittees know that you appreciate receiving this material electronically (and before those getting it by snail mail). - -------------------------------------------------------- Dennis R. As a result of a rash of bogus subscriptions (ie. some prankster subscribing unwary persons to EVERY list on this system--over 55 of them!), the Majordomo list management software will NO LONGER automatically accept subscription requests. Instead, the requests will come to me and I will send the purported subscriber--at the email address that "they" seem to have tried to subscribe at, a note asking them to reconfirm their desire to subscribe. This affects ONLY the "subscribe" function. Any subscriber can continue to "unsubscribe" themselves from any QUALITY.ORG mailing list without system administrator interference. (This also ONLY affects the lists supported here at QUALITY.ORG, not the list I *moderate* but which is supported at the princeton.edu system.) My apology for this new policy, but it's to better protect YOU from unwanted invasions of the privacy of your accounts, as well as to enable us to serve you better by not having to waste so much time going back to delete all the bogus subscriptions. The cost is $90 for members, $157 for non-members (includes one year of ASQC membership). BTW, every time I've taken an exam, it's been 8:30-12:30, not 8-12. Will you be attending the ASQC Annual Quality Conference in Chicago this coming May 13-15? I'm going to be organizing another off-site dinner gathering for online quality types to get together and bemoan the state of cyber-quality or just chat with one another and put some faces to the email addresses on the past year's list messages. If so, or even if you're not sure yet, let me know and I'll add your address to our "1996 Chicago AQC CyberQ's Dinner" distribution list. Being on the list doesn't commit you to anything. As time grows nearer, I'll post the announcement of where we'll be meeting and when and solicit for RSVPs, and this distribution list will let me do so without unduly annoying all of those who couldn't be less interested. It will also let us talk amongst ourselves about scheduling, etc. I'll post the address to to the CyberQ distribution list as soon as I have enough addresses to justify creating it. It *WON'T* be a public discussion list, just a vehicle for us to talk about getting a dinner group together in Chicago. Seventeen of us got together for the first dinner at AQC in Cincinnati this past year, and I'd like to meet even more of you this coming year! Note: If you live in the Chicago area--or are familiar with the area around the Chicago Hilton and Towers (where AQC will be headquartered), let me know your suggestions for a reasonably-priced, low-key, off-the-beaten-path restaurant for consideration as our dinner locale. For obvious reasons, it is called: QS9000@quality.org Like all other QUALITY.ORG lists, non-subscribers to a list may *not* post messages to that list. This means that, unless you subscribe to a specific list, you also may not post to that list *except* from the address at which you are subscribed. For example, if you are subscribed to the QS9000 list from your account at America Online, you may *not* also post messages to the list from your account at xyz.com, as the system will not know that "JoeBlow@aol.com" is the same person as "JoeBlow@xyz.com". Sorry, it's just a program and not intuitive. - --------- All subscription/deletion/information requests for QUALITY.ORG lists are handled by an automated list management program, so you need to use only specific command syntax to communicate your wishes to the program (see below), and email those commands ONLY to the program's address, which is: majordomo@quality.org 1. To Receive the Information File ------------------------------- In the BODY of your message, place ONLY these two words: info qs9000 2. To Subscribe to the QS9000 List ------------------------------- In the BODY of your message, place ONLY these two words: subscribe qs9000 Majordomo will respond by sending you a confirmatory message when your subscription has been processed. Please SAVE THAT MESSAGE, as it will also contain the instructions on how to remove yourself from the list, and that will save all of us from having to suffer those annoying "unsubscribe me" messages that unmoderated lists frequently incur from discourteous subscribers who haven't saved the information they were sent. 3. To Unsubscribe From the List ---------------------------- In the BODY of your message, place ONLY these two words: unsubscribe qs9000 (Note: The command syntax is *not* case-sensitive, so QS9000 and qs9000 are the same to the program.) REMEMBER: The only address that can automatically process your subscription, deletion and information requests is: majordomo@quality.org If you have any questions about this process or with any other administrative function of QUALITY.ORG, email: help@quality.org - -------- ============================================================================== Bill Casti, CQA Email: help@quality.org Domain Owner Pager: +1 800 604 6149 QUALITY.ORG Fax: +1 703 716 0479 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "The first court-sanctioned wiretap on the Internet led to the arrest of three people today..." -- 12/29/95 newswire - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Send me your PGP public key.
