This four-day event brings together representatives from government, industry, and academia for a truly global perspective on software process improvement. SEPG 97 builds on the success of the previous eight years of SEPG conferences and sharpens the focus by concentrating upon the people, processes, and technology that make software process work in the real world. This year's conference, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, will draw upon the local high technology environment to provide a showcase of the "stuff that works" in software process. The conference will include plenary sessions, invited and contributed presentations, tutorials, panel discussions, poster sessions, and informal birds-of-a-feather (BOF) meetings. Vendor exhibits and special off-site events will also be offered. Important Dates August 1, 1996 Submission deadline for contributions October 1, 1996 Acceptance notification mailed to authors January 1, 1997 Camera and electronic media ready materials due For more information about the conference, contact-- SEI Customer Relations Software Engineering Institute Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, PA 15213-3890 Voice 412 / 268-5800 FAX 412 / 268-5758 Internet customer-relations@sei.cmu.edu World Wide Web http://www.sei.cmu.edu For more information about vendor exhibits, contact-- Heather Stupak Software Engineering Institute Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, PA 15213-3890 Voice 412 / 268-1587 FAX 412 / 268-5556 Internet hstupak@sei.cmu.edu Call For Participation We are seeking proposals for paper presentations, tutorials, panel discussions, and poster sessions. We welcome any submission; however, in keeping with the conference theme, special consideration will be given to proposals from practitioners who have a story to tell about the "stuff that works" and "stuff that didn't work" in improving or implementing their software processes. SEPG 97 is intended to capture the lessons learned from actual, real-world projects. We are looking for proposals from practitioners to describe their experiences in subject areas like, but not limited to those below. People . establishing a software process training program in a diverse company . motivating senior management to buy into software process improvement . managing software projects at different levels of process maturity . staffing small software projects for process improvement . application of quality audits to process improvement . skills needed for process improvement professionals . handling integrated product development and IPD teams effectively Process . tailoring large project processes to meet small project needs . applying software process concepts to commercial software ventures . evolving software processes in a changing environment . constructing the infrastructure for process improvement . estimating cost, managing risks, and testing software . why software process improvement was beneficial/not beneficial . what would be done differently next time . integrating process and technology Technology . automating software configuration management across wide-area, multi-site software development . establishing an in-process metrics program through computer applications . establishing common software development tools across multiple diverse companies within the same corporation . using automation effectively to minimize paperwork and manual processes . top 10 process improvement tools . models of process improvement . application of reuse and re-engineering technologies Upon selection for participation, final submission of camera-ready materials will require the execution of a copyright release. Proposal Specifications Tutorials Tutorials have always been an important part of all previous SEPG conferences. They provide the opportunity for subject area experts to share their expertise with other members of their profession. Tutorials should address the people, process, and technology issues that the conference covers. Tutorials should enable participants to apply specific techniques to real-world problems rather than surveying a subject matter on an abstract level. Tutorial proposals must include: . statement of learning objectives of the tutorial . 1-3 paragraph overview of the tutorial . 3-sentence summary for the preliminary program . 4 copies of 3- to 5-page tutorial description . tutorial outline and duration (i.e., full day or half day) . level and orientation of audience (including any assumed prerequisites) . materials to be provided with the tutorial (e.g., special reports) . instructor(s) background and prior offering of the course (if any) Upon acceptance, tutorial authors will be mailed specifications for the final submission of camera-ready and soft-copy format materials to be included in the conference proceedings. The Program Committee must understand how the work is similar to and different from related work of others. Where available, presentation of practical tools (forms, checklists, procedures, etc.), empirical data (metrics) and tradeoffs are encouraged. Contributions that describe results, not just proposals, of applying software process improvement techniques are solicited in any of these areas. Accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings. Presentation proposals must include: . removable one-page author description including name(s), address(es), etc. to facilitate the "in-the-blind" review process . 6 copies of 5- to 7-page paper (including 1/4-page abstract, keywords, and bibliography) without author attribution . papers must not identify the author in any form Upon acceptance, presentation authors will be mailed specifications for the final submission of camera-ready and soft-copy format materials to be included in the conference proceedings. These are some of the questions that we continuously asked ourselves and others and were not able to get objective answers. One project that integrates all the models refered above is SPICE (Software Process Improvement and Capability dEtermination), an iniciative from ISO/IEC SC7 (subcomitee on software engineering). For all of you involved in Software Process Improvement, Software Quality Assurance and/or Software Aquisition please take note of the following landmark event: The INTERNATIONAL SPICE SYMPOSIUM '96 will take place at the paradisiac Acapulco in Mexico and will offer a unique oportunity for the Software comunity in general to learn about the SPICE Proyect and the latest developments from the project participants themselves. Among the information available: SPICE document set, assessment tool, up to date trials results, and information on trials participation. You should be able to answer all your questions and concerns about SPICE and its impact on the software comunity, first hand, from the project leaders and participants. Here is an update. The following is a short introduction to the SWIQ and then a meeting announcement. The SWIQ is a US based organization formed in January 1995 to continue the US software auditor certification work begun by the SQSR. During 1995 the SWIQ prepared and presented a proposal to the RAB for adding software auditor certification requirements to the existing RAB procedure for certifying ISO 9000 auditors. After our presentation to the RAB on 14 November 1995 and subsequent telecons, the RAB chose not to address the technical merits of our proposal. Consequently nothing will change at the RAB level regarding the certification of ISO 9000 software auditors. The SWIQ is holding a meeting in late June to discuss the RAB's response to our proposal and discuss further actions (see below). If you are interested in participating in this meeting and joining the SWIQ please contact Nancy Selby at naselby@CCGATE.HAC.COM Henry Schneider Software Industry Quality Forum ===================================================================== A planning session for the SWIQ will occur on June 27-28 in Denver. This meeting will give the SWIQ an opportunity to close out our involvement with the RAB and discuss options for involvement in other areas. TickIT was recently opened at all levels making it possible for another accreditor to petition DISC-TickIT to offer the same services as the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). This new opportunity would certainly be a positive outlet for the SWIQ initiatives and recommendations recently stifled by the RAB. Currently, the plan is to have the meeting in the south part of Denver which would make access to the Colorado Springs airport easier. Flights into Colorado Springs are generally a substantial savings over flying into Denver. Please let me know by May 31, 1996, if you are interested in attending.
