EVALUATING ISO 9000 FOR YOUR COMPANY Believe it or not, a school system has been registered compliant with ISO 9000! Such broad acceptance of this standard is indicative of the usefulness of ISO 9000 and something all companies should consider. ISO 9000 can and does apply to everyone; regardless of size or the nature of the business. ISO 9000 is rapidly becoming one of the world's most widely known and highly used mechanisms for demonstrating a commitment to quality. Currently there are over 300,000 registrations, world-wide, in all facets of business (with approximately 2,500 - 3,500 registrations in South Africa). Considering that there were only 200+ in 1992, the program is showing a remarkable growth rate.

Gaining value from ISO 9000 revisions By AMY ZUCKERMAN The ISO 9000 quality-assurance standard is being revised to focus far more on continuous improvement and customer satisfaction. The standards, slated for fall 2000 at the earliest, will emphasize international organization and in-house performance, rather than engineering, as the best way to deliver a product or service. Companies that have opted out of the ISO 9000 process and have merely pursued registration to "pass a test" for marketing purposes might face some remedial work to continue meeting registration requirements for the revisions, says Reg Blake, regulatory manager for the British Standards Institution. But meeting the 2000 revisions doesnt have to be costly or onerous, considering the added value the process can bring.

Information : Quality Management System Quality influences a company's ability to attain world-class status. Today's companies face a myriad of quality standards and systems which are imposed by their customers and changing market conditions. Quality standards such as the international standard (ISO 9000); the automotive standard (QS 9000); the new aerospace standard (SAE ARD 9000); and Boeing's D1-9000 standard were developed to assist suppliers in implementing basic quality systems. However, the sheer number of standards may impose too many checkpoints on a company's quality management system. The challenge is to devise an effective method for addressing all the requirements. In Strite's case, the company must also meet the FDA's Good Manufacturing Process certification requirements.

Guidance on interpretation and implementation
The Reality of ISO 9000 by Yehuda Dror Misinformation about ISO 9000 is leading many companies down the wrong path. You can hardly open an industry-related magazine without seeing an article on or reference to ISO 9000. The debate surrounding the value of the standard has taken on near-theological dimensions, with separation into "believers" and "nonbelievers," both of whom argue their position with fervor and intensity in an attempt to prove the other side wrong. As sometimes happens in these cases, the myth, ideology and rhetoric usually mask a misunderstanding of the standard's intent and create a hopeless muddle of conflicting information.

Management and the Quality Plan Elements 4.1 and 4.2 of ISO 9001, 9002, and 9003 deal with management responsibility and the quality plan used at a company. Although these are the key elements of any management based quality system, we have waited until now to discuss them. In the past few articles in this series, we spent time discussing design review and document control in detail, since these are the two elements companies fail most often. The Key Word is "Management" Remember, ISO 9000 is a standard on the management system of quality assurance. As such, the ISO 9000 standard begins by assuming that your company has a consistent, well-documented system of quality assurance that is understood by all employees. As we have indicated in past articles, a lead assessor is interested in finding out if every person in your organization knows their job and how that job affects the quality of the product.
