ISO & TQM: Why Bother?? One has heard that in order for an organization to survive today, it must meet and exceed the expectations of its customers. Organizations are told to be customer focused and driven with all of their systems designed to meet the customers' needs. Organizations are asked to "do it right the first time" and to continuously improve. Calculations are made to show the "price of non-compliance." Commentators talk about the need for "Total Quality Management (TQM)." As one drives arounindustrial areas in many cities, one notices more and more banners hanging outside on the walls of many plants and office buildings proudly telling the world that the organization inside has met ISO registration standards. There are ads in local newspaper like the Financial Post and Globe & Mail in which organizations as diverse as car dealers, insurance brokers and tool and die shops identify to new and prospective customers that they have received ISO registration.

Quality Excellence in Mexico ANN ARBOR, MI (5/12/2000) Dana Corp. announced its Motors and Controls facility in Chihuahua, Mexico, reached a quality landmark with 63 weeks of zero defects. The Chihuahua facility started its perfect record in early 1999. With over 750 employees, the facility uses QS-9000 and ISO 9002 systems to continually improve quality levels. All-time production levels were reached in March, increasing normal levels by 18%, while maintaining "zero" defect "When you empower people, give them the right tools, provide the right environment and direction, you can expect the right results," says Chihuahua plant manager, Enrique Hurtado. Employees at the facility record some of the highest training hours within Dana. Not including on-the-job training, they averaged 90 hours of training in 1999. The facility manufactures speed controls for Ford through Ford's Visteon operations. About 3.6 million speed controls are made there each year for Ford, Toyota, and Mazda passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks. In 1999, Chihuahua employees received the Clean Industry national environmental award from the Mexican government, and also received the Safety Award from the State of Chihuahua

ISO Registration. . . Then What? Written by Diane J. Ploch with technical assistance from Guy Rosato of GAR and Kelly Parent of Abbott Ball Company The preparation and work involved in first obtaining ISO registration often yields benefits such as improved teamwork, more consistent quality and streamlined operations. But what happens down the road? Can a company keep up the standard? What are the long-range impacts of ISO registration? How does it affect a small company versus a large company? We talked to two different types of manufacturers to see how ISO registration is affecting them more than a year after initial registration. Established in 1945, GAR Electroforming Division (GAR), Electroformers, Inc. of Danbury, is a small manufacturer, but is one of the nation's leading electroforming companies and a supplier to the aerospace industry. The company received ISO 9002 registration and AS 9000 compliance (the aerospace industry version of the ISO 9000 program) in September 1998.

Measurement Research Resolving CMM Uncertainties DALLAS, TX (7/10/2000). The International Standards Organization is in the final phases of re-writing its 9000 series quality standard that will include a requirement that manufacturers determine the level of uncertainty they have when measuring the toleranced features of their parts and products. Coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) are capable of precisely measuring features, but there have always been difficulties in assessing the accuracy of those measurements. A new company, called MetroSage, has been formed in California by some of the nation's leading metrology and software researchers to address this tricky, technical challenge. The company is a result of a decade-long research commitment made by the Consortium for Advancement Manufacturing--International (CAM-I). Work conducted by the National Institute of Standards

| Making ISO 9000 as Difficult as Possible 1. Don't look for improved ways of documenting your quality system. Keeping your current documentation system in place at all costs is often unwise. Many companies spend hundreds of hours rewriting/restructuring their current documentation, only to find that they have missed some important areas, or not met the requirements of the standard. This leads to additional revisions or, in worse case scenarios, starting over from scratch. Many packages exist that will guide you through the documentation requirements of the standard, ensuring that nothing is missed, and these provide a useful guide which you can tailor to meet your individual needs.
