ISO 9000 Explained

A little background on ISO 9000 The Geneva-based International Organization for Standardization published the ISO 9000 series of standards for quality assurance in 1987 to provide guidelines for consistent quality practices across international borders. "ISO" is derived from the Greek word "isos," meaning equal. ISO 9000 aims to establish a level, or equal, playing field of quality assurance from company to company, country to country.

ISO 9000 - The International Approach to TQM This is the first in a series of short articles about the International Standards Organization (headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland) documents known collectively as ISO 9000. We shall discuss: The importance of the standards in Europe. What the words "ISO 9000 Certified" convey when applied to a commercial enterprise. Why we are beginning to see more emphasis on these standards in the US. The importance of the ISO Standards to the blood banking community. FDA has signaled its intent to use the ISO 9002 specification, which applies to computer software, as the agency moves forward with the 510(k) approach to approve software used by blood centers (and presumably transfusion services) as a medical device.

EMC Corp. Realizes $8 Million Savings Through ISO Process Reprinted from: NQA Update When EMC Corp. of Hopkinton, Mass., first decided to pursue ISO registration, it recognized a way to measure the effectiveness of its Total Quality Management (TQM) program against a set standard. EMC Corp., which manufactures disk storage systems for IBM mainframe and AS400 marketplaces, believed it already had an effective TQM program in place. After all, in 1991 alone, its employees had saved the company approximately $1.8 million through continuous improvement. Guidance on interpretation and implementation

CM and PDM Defined The combined disciplines of Configuration Management and Product Data Management (CM/PDM) have gained popularity in recent years because of the world-wide attention drawn to the concurrent engineering and total quality management initiatives. CE and TQM are aimed at achieving higher levels of product quality, shortening new product development cycles, improving customer satisfaction and acceptance, and reducing the costs of design, manufacturing and on-going support. How To Avoid Software Quality by Keith Woodward This article first appeared in SQM issue 3 We all know why software quality should be avoided. It pleases user management if initial development costs are as low as possible. It pleases software developers if there is a large maintenance work load to keep programmers fully employed and the department well staffed.
Adapting ISO 9000 to Specific Industry Needs Here are the current options for putting your industry's own spin on the language of ISO 9000. MELISSA LARSON As manufacturing professionals contemplate the expected overhaul of ISO 9000 in 1999, a separate but related debate is taking place in the worldwide quality community over how individual industries can best comply with the standard. Since its inception, ISO 9000 has been used as a basis document, with amendments and appendices, by a number of specific U.S. industries with strong quality-standards traditions of their own, whose proponents felt the international standard did not address certain essential quality issues unique to their own types of manufacturing operations. .
