The Big Picture

ISO, ISO 9000, ISO 14000 he ISO 9000 series of International Standards for quality management and quality assurance has been adopted in more than 90 countries and is being implemented by thousands of manufacturing or service organizations in both public and private sectors. One of the most successful series of standards in the history of ISO (International Organization for Standardization), ISO 9000 has generated much publicity and made the name of ISO known to a wider business community than the specialists directly concerned with technical standards.

An Introduction to ISO 9000 ISO 9000 is a generic term used to describe a set of five separate yet related standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). These standards were introduced in 1987, and have to date been adopted by more than 96 countries. They are generic in nature and are designed to be utilized by manufacturing, process, and service industries alike.

ISO 9000 Quality Systems In recent years, worldwide electronics and manufacturing industries have shown an increasing interest in quality programs, including certification to the ISO 9000 international quality standard. A well implemented program not only increases employee and operational efficiency within an organization, but also assures customers of quality products, services, and support. A look at the ISO standard and Artesyn's quality program provides insight into the effects on supplier and customer. We got an early taste of the benefits of an effective quality system back in the days when we were known as Heurikon Corporation. In 1988, we bid for and won a contract to manufacture a wireless communications base station for Motorola.
