| Introduction to ISO What are standards ? Standards are documented agreements containing technical specifications or other precise criteria to be used consistently as rules, guidelines, or definitions of characteristics, to ensure that materials, products, processes and services are fit for their purpose. For example, the format of the credit cards, phone cards, and "smart" cards that have become commonplace is derived from an ISO International Standard. Adhering to the standard, which defines such features as an optimal thickness (0,76 mm), means that the cards can be used worldwide. International Standards thus contribute to making life simpler, and to increasing the reliability and effectiveness of the goods and services we use. |

| Developing a Business Process Approach to ISO 9000 by Rod Southard. Registration should not be the only goal when becoming ISO 9000 compliant; it should be a secondary benefit to developing an effective quality system. Developing a quality system, such as ISO 9000, is one of the most important processes an organization will undertake. This effort should produce the framework to manage the various processes within the company for many years. The processes must control the activities within the organization. This control cannot be left up to the individuals within the organization to manage as they deem necessary. |

and ISO 9001 Robert Bamford, William J. Deibler II The software engineering practices associated with software configuration management (SCM or CM) offer a number of opportunities to address requirements found in the International Standard, ISO 9001. From a management perspective, the principles and practices of CM represent an accepted and understood foundation for implementing ISO-compliant processes in software engineering organizations. In addition, the growing number of tools for automating CM practices are avenues for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of these processes. This article begins with brief, general definitions of configuration management and of ISO 9001. |

| Weighing Alternative ISO 9000 Registraiton: Not for All Companies By Paul Scicchitano , Quality Systems Update, (703) 250-5900; E-mail: isoeditor@aol.com May/June 1996 With ISO 9000 registration costing thousands of dollars a whack, the concept of alternative registration has been gaining momentum in the United States and Europe. But whether it will be a viable option for most companies or just for the Fortune 500 set is anybody's guess. The concept, initially proposed by the computer-printer giant Hewlett-Packard in November 1994, has been widely interpreted as a combination of stepped-up internal audits and reduced registrar oversight. The real savings for companies, say industry experts, will lie in shifting the burden of registrar follow-up visits from a third-party audit team back to the end users of the quality system. |

| Some general thoughts about system registration Registration involves an objective, third-party assessment of your quality or environmental system to established and recognized standards, such as ISO 9000, QS-9000 or ISO 14001. When an independent auditing team finds that a company's system complies with each of the requirements of the appropriate standard, the company is said to be Registered. Often, registrations are published in a directory, such as the UL Directory of Registered Firms, and serve as evidence of compliance to customers, stake holders, regulatory interests and the public | Environmentally Safe Storage Tanks from
