Standardization: A Management Tool for Building Success Standards: Up front on the world stage As we move toward a global economy, standardization issues continue to grow more complex. In fact, standards are now absolutely critical to the survival and prosperity of companies marketing in multiple nations. Products must function and be accepted in differing cultures, value systems and environments. What's more, most goods are no longer produced in one community for use solely in that location - and that affects us on the domestic front. For example, it is not unusual for products marketed in Europe to have been assembled in the U.S. from components made in Asia. Quality Environmental Services Quality in Service : What is it? Is it important? How can it be measured? How can you develop your quality determination system?

ISO 9000 at Work

Lessons Learned at Perfection As management quality representative Tony George departs, there's no shortage of opinion as to where the ISO 9000 project went wrong. "I wish we had done a bit more research up front," --Tony George Former management Quality representative Perfection Products Inc. There wasn't necessarily a "deep bench" as far as employees being cross-trained to cover each other's responsibilities. MELISSA LARSON As I write this, it is Thursday, December 5, 1996. On the desk calendar in my office, the date is circled in red, and big letters read "Perfection's pre-assessment."

Mark My Word: To Live Is By The Rules By Mark Albert, Executive Editor One of the most important lessons we've learned from the quality assurrance revolution that has been taking place in manufacturing over the last ten years or so is the value of having good rules about quality procedures and following these rules conscientiously. Adopting ISO 9000 standards has certainly established these concepts as a way of life on the plant floor.

ISO Implementation

Guidance on interpretation and implementation

QS-9000 Issues for the Chemical/Bulk Material Industries © TQM Consulting, 1998 The dimensioned parts concepts embedded in QS-9000 are causing confusion and other difficulties in the Chemical and Process Industries (CPI). Proper interpretation and implementation of the additional QS-9000 requirements can lead to significant improvements in quality, cost and performance, while minimizing non-value added bureaucracy. This paper is being published in early 1998, just prior to release of the 3rd edition of QS-9000, and with the first draft of BMAP (Bulk Material Approval Process for the paint industry) nearing completion. The statements in the left-hand column were originally published in early 1997, and are examined to see what changes, if any, are being contemplated to address the concerns. The updated comments appear in the right-hand column.

Registering Your System

The Tide Turns against Nonaccredited Certification On the 18 July (1997) Quality Assurance Systems Ltd (QAS), a nonaccredited certification body, was successfully prosecuted by Northamptonshire County Council Trading Standards Service for offences under the Trade Descriptions Act 1968. The offences related to the issue of registration certificates containing false statements that firms had been assessed and approved to ISO 9002. David Hedger, the main investigating officer at Northamptonshire Trading Standards, reports... "The Keystone to the Story of the County and its People"

Paybacks beyond the plaque on the wall ISO-registered companies enjoy benefits including improved quality and customer satisfaction By Malcolm Rowan ISO 9000 is more than just a plaque on the wall. How many times have you heard that statement, wondered exactly what it meant and asked how your company could get the most out of certification? ISO 9000 registration is expensive and it's not surprising companies want more than a plaque on the wall for their investments. A 1996 US survey involving 7,000 certified firms illustrates the average company spends $252,000 to become registered--down about $79,000 from three years ago.
