The Big Picture

Change for the Better via ISO 9000 and TQM; Samuel K. M. Ho The fundamentals of TQM are revisited for providing a relevant perspective on business excellence. Judging from the experience of the Japanese TQM movement, there is a need for a step-by-step approach towards TQ. As a result of exploratory research, a model called TQMEX standing for TQM EXcellence Model has been developed based on sound TQM practices. Both the theoretical background, personal experience and results of an intensive questionnaire survey conducted in Hong Kong, Japan and the UK have highlighted the importance of the Japanese 5-S, BPR, QCC, ISO 9000 and TPM on TQM practice. The findings are useful for firms wanting to benchmark against the business excellence of leading firms which have survived and grown despite the two global oil crisis and the recent Asian financial turmoil. ISO 9000 at Work

Working Smart MAXIMIZE THE PAYOFF FROM INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Hell is paved with good intentions," said 18th century author Samuel Johnson. In the quality movement, hell is paved with something known as "documentation," a swirl of official scribblings that can overwhelm any well-intentioned administrator. For Sun Microsystems Computer Co., based in Mountain View, Calif., the swirl revolves around a set of quality edicts developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in 1987. Known as ISO 9000, it establishes quality baselines for such processes as production, design and service; in qualifying for the standard, companies gain the industrial equivalent of the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. ISO 9000's language is purposely vague enough to apply across industries-and stringent enough to create a paper-paved road to you know where. ISO Implementation

Guidance on interpretation and implementation

The SEI Software Capability Maturity Model By: Larry W. Whittington The Software Engineering Institute uses a conceptual framework based on industry best practices to assess the process maturity, capability, and performance of a software development organization. This framework is called the Capability Maturity Model. The Capability Maturity Model defines five levels of process maturity: 1.Initial (worship the hero) 2.Repeatable (plan the work) 3.Defined (work the plan) 4.Managed (measure the work) 5.Optimizing (work the measures) The extent to which Key Process Areas (related clusters of activities that enhance process capability) are implemented at each level determines the process maturity level rating of an organization. Five Steps To "Quality Inherent" Manufacturing Measuring and controlling your metalworking processes is the best route to high quality production. By Jack Teegarden Federal Products Co. Providence, Rhode Island. Many of the basic notions about quality in metalworking have undergone significant change in recent years. Where it once was enough to document part quality in order to satisfy demanding customers, ISO 9000 and the vendor certification schemes of various OEMs now make it necessary to document the quality process itself. Statistical methodologies have largely superseded inspection as the determinant of whether a lot passes or fails. Dimensional accuracy—once virtually synonymous with quality in metalworking—is no longer the only critical criterion. As tolerances in some industries enter the sub-micron level, design engineers are finding it necessary to write—and manufacturers to meet—detailed specifications for part geometry and surface finish. Registering Your System

Tips for Selecting an ISO 9000 Registrar Like most of life’s major purchases for the home or business, it pays to "shop around" for a registrar. Don't take the first one that comes along. Ask for and check the references. Request the resumes of the registrar's proposed audit team. You are their customer. Registrars are there to provide a service to you. Make sure that you get what you pay for. Most importantly, don't let price alone be the deciding factor. Look for the value added. Again, you get what you pay for.
