| We Need More Standards Like ISO 9000 Roy Rada Virtual University Academic Officer Washington State University Pullman, WA 99164-2725 Standards are often about a product but can be about management. The pre-eminent standard in the area of management is the international quality management standard ISO 9000. Such standards are more important to an organization's success than are technical standards. Yet, the vast majority of ISO standards are about specific technical products, such as computer operating systems. What is ISO 9000? Why is it important? The standard provides a general framework for quality management and is targeted towards manufacturing organizations. The challenge to the organization is to invest in the additional workload of the maintenance of records for monitoring quality in such a way that the profitability of the company is improved. | Back

| Trading in the global marketplace
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has been in place for just over 50 years, but for much of that time it has kept a very low profile. ISO's first foray into significantly influencing international trade came with the move to containerization of cargo in the 1960s. The organization again took a higher profile when the move to internationalize manufacturing gained momentum in the 1980s and, although there were many quality systems in use at the time, ISO 9000 emerged as the first one to become truly global. Despite these successes, ISO is hardly a household name today. However, the acceleration of globalization of international trade, which emerged in the 1990s, will ensure that ISO will have a much larger role to play in the next century than ever before. Internet trading is one example of globalized trade that has emphasized the difficulty in imposing national controls on the supply of goods in a global marketplace. |

| Move Over, JCAHO There's another game in town, as far as one Louisiana hospital is concerned By Don Babwin The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations may have its critics, but one Southern hospital really has no use for the agency. American Legion Hospital in Crowley, La., about halfway between Baton Rouge and the Texas border, is the first U.S. facility to chuck JCAHO, then adopt ISO 9000, a set of quality standards used by businesses ranging from automakers to zener diode producers. The standards, which provide guidance for quality management, cover training, purchasing, document and data control, equipment testing, and process control. ISO--short for International Organization for Standardization--has been around for decades and is used in several foreign hospitals. "They don't tell you how to run this business," says Ame | Know

| Internal Quality System Audits - 4.17 Reviewed Protocols, procedures and the approach to an internal audit should be the same as that applied during an external assessment. As well as ensuring compliance, this approach familiarises the staff with the correct style of audit and builds confidence when faced with the " show me? " approach to questioning. New skills may be needed to ensure that the managers understand and become familiar with the role of the audit and programme, to remove the fear and resistance commonly associated with audit activities | BDCcan guide you through all the steps required to obtain ISO 9000 registration.

| Making written procedures work by Onno van Ewyk Many procedure manuals are large multi-volume works, the initial drafting of which involved many person.months of work. And yet the work has been completely wasted, because they are never used. How can an organisation make written procedures effective? | Are you considering building,

| Choosing a Certification Body Choosing an ISO 9000 Certification Body has become a difficult task with many operators in South Africa at present. The Certification Body will be providing a service just like any other supplier that you may have and you will be paying for this. It is therefore important to find out about the size and financial status of the organisation, the certification process itself and the resources to their disposal, especially the expertise related to your field of operation. This relates directly to the competence of the Auditors used. Auditors can register Nationally through The South African Auditor & Training Certification Association (SAATCA) and Internationally through the International Register of Certificated Auditors (IRCA). This registration is applicable to the competence of an auditor in specific industries. | See

| The Benefits of Registration The ISO certification should not
be seen as a panacea to all quality-related problems. In
fact, it is only a base line model for quality assurance
which can and should be upgraded continuously. It
represents a documented system for quality assurance and
the real benefit (besides improved quality) it offers is
that it raises the confidence of the third party dealing
with the registered unit. There is indeed a facelift in
the organisations corporate image and not
surprisingly, an advertising campaign follows the
