The Big Picture

History of ISO 9000 ISO 9000 is a quality management system model written by Technical Committee 176 (TC-176) made up from the (12) European Community Members. This group's goal was to write a set of standards which would be unique in that they could be applied to a wide range of businesses, both manufacturing and those providing services. Today, this group is made up of representatives from over 91 countries around the world. This international standard was officially released in 1987 and revised in 1994. ISO 9000 has been widely accepted around the world by industry and governments alike including the U.S. Back Issues of this newsletter are available at Quality Org

ISO 9000: It Doesn't Apply To Us...Or Does It? The ISO 9000 Quality System - what is it? ISO 9000's not for us because it doesn’t fit in with our business! These are the types of things many people in the fabrication and construction industries are saying. We hear these comments because people are not familiar with the principles of ISO 9000 , and what it can do for their organization. Many people have heard of ISO 9000, but they don’t understand the hidden benefits and therefore, a sense of apprehension is created. When personal computers were first introduced, people would say, "How will computers help me?". Today few companies in our technological society operate without a personal computer. The acceptance of the ISO 9000 philosophy, can be compared to that of the personal computer; however, some industries see the benefits before others. This is not true of everybody and there are companies in fabrication and construction that have successfully completed the registration process. Guidance on interpretation and implementation

Tips for ISO 9000 Preparation Establish a Purchasing System Melissa Larson Senior Editor ISO 9000 Element 4.6: Purchasing Key requirements of Purchasing (in part): Components and third-party material that go into product must meet the specifications of the product. Subcontractors must be capable of meeting those requirements. To assess subcontractor’s capability, they must be evaluated in terms of their product, quality audit reports, quality records of previously demonstrated capability, and performance. Records of acceptable subcontractors need to be maintained. All purchasing documents must include data that thoroughly describe the products and services. Purchasing documents must be reviewed and approved to assure they meet the specified requirements. Arrangements for verification and release of purchased product that occurs at the subcontractor’s premises must be specified in the purchasing documents.

Internal auditors: Make them work for you Don’t let your internal auditors go to waste—They can be highly effective at continuously improving your business. Holly Ann Suzik Associate Editor Most companies don’t effectively use their internal auditors. Instead of applying their internal auditors’ skills toward continuously improving the business, companies view them as police officers, who are simply there because ISO 9000 requires it. "Most internal auditors are not very efficient and effective, and they are essentially policemen," agreed Dennis Arter, quality assurance consultant in Kennewick, WA, and member of the U.S. Standards Group on Quality, Environment, Dependability, and Statistics. He explained that an internal auditor’s role should go beyond compliance, which is what third-party auditors do. Still, the compliance model is taught to internal auditors because that’s how we traditionally think of auditing. Companies don’t realize that internal auditors can be trained to go beyond compliance and can analyze whether requirements are effective. Registering Your System

The Process of ISO registration One of the important aspects of the ISO registration process is to verify whether the unit seeking registration is indeed doing what is being claimed in its quality manual. The best strategy to adopt when embarking on the road to ISO registration is to adopt a simple model: design a quality assurance model from bottom up to ensure that what is done is indeed what is documented. Most auditors, while doing third party audits for registration, like to follow the "show me mapping" process.

Is QA Certification just more red tape? by Onno van Ewyk When Alf Brown, General Manager of a medium sized computer service company, received an official looking letter from his largest customer informing him that he would have to prove his company had an "adequate quality assurance system" if it was to remain on their "approved suppliers list", his first question was "why?". As far as he was aware the customer was more than happy with the quality of his products and services and, besides, surely the systems he used in his company were his business and nobody else's. As he delved more deeply into what it would mean to create an "adequate quality assurance system" he became even more concerned. He would have to comply with a complex code published by the International Organisation for Standards called the ISO 9000 series (also published by Standards Australia as the AS 3900 series). This meant hiring consultants to help interpret the ten or so documents making up the series, tying up valuable employee time to write down all the company's procedures, and paying external auditors to inspect the procedures before issuing a certificate. He had no room to accommodate these demands in his tight operating budgets.
