| Inject ISO into health-care system Nobody can afford to rest on reputation anymore. In the case of the health-care industry, competition gets tougher as health care become more global. That means what was considered good today is seen as minimal tomorrow. What we need to strive for are systems that promote excellence. The attraction of this approach is primarily due to the idea of getting geared-up for excellence rather than settling for minimum level. ISO 9000 standards provide the yardstick to assess performance. Today, health care is under pressure to reform and must take steps to operate like a business. ISO 9000 is an excellent way to do that. Health-care organizations have always recognized quality as an important part of their mission and have a strong orientation to quality concepts. Even though quality has been the foundation in health care, quality has not been defined as what is important to the patient. In the case of the health-care industry, an ISO 9000 quality system can help: | Know

| ISO 9000: Conformity vs. Registration Though some may be tempted to conclude that simply conforming to ISO standards is enough to satisfy customers, Registration is essential to true continuous quality improvement. It is also the route to international recognition of ISO standards. To simply conform, a supplier may use internal auditors, whose experience and training are not subject to outside control. Registration, on the other hand, requires qualified, currently certified ISO auditors who bring to suppliers their continuous audit experience and training. ISO auditors, being independent of the suppliers system, are also better able to identify non-conformities, areas for improvement, and ensuring the system is connected to their products/services. | References available.
