| The Process King vs. the Cowboys Why do I, someone who hasn't written a line of code in my life, think I have any business commenting on the effectiveness of software process improvement (SPI) programs? Because I have a column! This fact alone makes my views validwhy, I happen to know that high military officers have already "taken under advisement" my counsel to start attacking the year 10,000 problem now, before it's too late. Having established my expertise, I offer my thoughts on the contrasting views expressed in this issue by Watts Humphrey, the former IBM technical executive and reigning king of process improvement, and Warren Keuffel, a former systems developer and SEPG member who concludes that the CMM and ISO 9000 are "underwhelming" fads that will never be adopted by America's "software cowboys." | Install this Newsletter on your Website for

| ISO 9000: No Longer a Stranger to Service In its relatively short existence, ISO 9000 has become a presence in more than 226,000 organizations worldwide. In the United States alone, there are nearly 19,000 registered companies. Originally, ISO 9000 was intended for manufacturing companies engaged in global trade. For this reason, the majority of registrations have come from the manufacturing industries, such as electronics, fabricated metals, and rubber and plastic products. During the last few years, however, ISO 9000 has steadily gained momentum in the U.S. service industry. | Quality Technical Books the Online Bookstore Offers Discounts on Technical Books |

| The Preventive Corrective-Action Report It's great to have a paper trail to track and fix mistakes. It's much better to have a form that helps fix the process so mistakes don't get made in the first place We were like a car heading uphill on icy terrain -- we just couldn't make progress," recalls Steve McClintick, president of Braas Co., a $25-million distributor of industrial-automation parts. Shipping and billing errors were so prevalent that Braas's salespeople were spending more time doing damage control than drumming up new business; internally, reworking costs and delays in accounts receivable were straining the company's resources. | See what

| ANSI - RAB National Accreditation Program Criteria For Bodies Operating Registration of Quality Management Systems In 1993, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Registrar Accreditation Board (RAB) established an accreditation system in response to a need for accreditation services for registrars of quality management systems in the United States. Since then ANSI and RAB have been successful in achieving international acceptance of this system. In addition, representatives of ANSI and RAB are active on a number of international committees and working groups to further promote harmonization between accreditation systems while continuing to meet the needs of its customers and stakeholders. | BDCcan guide you through all the steps required to obtain ISO 9000 registration. |
| Electronics Fastest Growing Industry for ISO 9000 The Globus Registry reports that 2,769 ISO 9000 certificates were issued to US manufacturers of electrical and electronics goods over the five year period 1993 to 1998. This makes this industry the fastest growing in the US for ISO 9000 registration. The growth rates were reported as the Globus Registry also announced that, as of May 1, 1999, at total of 26,316 ISO 9000 certificates had been issued in the USA. Other high growth industries reported by the Globus Registry included: industrial and commercial machinery and equipment manufacturing (+2,529 certificates); fabricated metals products manufacturing (+2,487); rubber and plastics products (+2,003); chemicals and allied products (+1,723); and transportation equipment manufacturing (+1,718). The highgrowth rates provide further evidence of the continuing proliferation of ISO 9000 registration within the US supply base and suggest that suppliers are still finding value in the registration process. Registration continues to be driven primarily bycustomer demand, although industry directives and customer pressures remain as strong driving forces. | Quality System
