| Standardization: A Management Tool for Building Success Standards: Up front on the world stage As we move toward a global economy, standardization issues continue to grow more complex. In fact, standards are now absolutely critical to the survival and prosperity of companies marketing in multiple nations. Products must function and be accepted in differing cultures, value systems and environments. What's more, most goods are no longer produced in one community for use solely in that location - and that affects us on the domestic front. For example, it is not unusual for products marketed in Europe to have been assembled in the U.S. from components made in Asia. | Back Issues of this newsletter are available at Quality Org |
| ISO 9000 In today's competitive environment companies and organisations must be able to deliver consistently, on time and within budget, what is required by the customer. Therefore, there should exist technical and administrative standards and procedures which can be used to promote consistent and sustainable quality levels in all aspects of your company's operations. ISO 9000 is used in over 130 countries and is becoming increasingly important, if only from a marketing perspective, as the international standard for judging the competence of supplier organisations in all industries. ISO 9000 is a general standard that is as applicable to the producers of hair dryers, as it is to developers of software. | Quality Technical Books the Online Bookstore Offers Discounts on Technical Books |
| NASA Headquarters Receives ISO 9001 Certification June 24, 1999 On June 2, NASA Headquarters was approved for ISO 9001 certification from an internationally recognized registrar, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) of Oslo Norway, and Houston, Texas. DNV conducted an audit of the NASA HQ Quality System on May 21 and recommended Headquarters for ISO 9001 certification. The scope of the certification includes the Strategic Enterprises - Scientific Research, Space Exploration, and Technology Development and Transfer missions. NASA Headquarters is now the only federal agency Headquarters registered to the internationally recognized ISO 9001 standard. In addition, research has indicated NASA Headquarters may be the only Headquarters organization of any type registered to ISO 9001. | Know

| Strite Industries Limited - Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Information : Quality Management System Quality influences a company's ability to attain world-class status. Today's companies face a myriad of quality standards and systems which are imposed by their customers and changing market conditions. Quality standards such as the international standard (ISO 9000); the automotive standard (QS 9000); the new aerospace standard (SAE ARD 9000); and Boeing's D1-9000 standard were developed to assist suppliers in implementing basic quality systems. However, the sheer number of standards may impose too many checkpoints on a company's quality management system. The challenge is to devise an effective method for addressing all the requirements. In Strite's case, the company must also meet the FDA's Good Manufacturing Process certification requirements. | Contact TechRite for Multimedia ISO 9000 Documentation Services |

| What will the ISO 9000 revisions mean for my organization? ISO is addressing the requirements of the many thousands of users worldwide of its ISO 9000 series of quality management standards by releasing a number of documents that provide answers to the most common questions being asked about the ongoing ISO 9000 revisions, scheduled for publication in the fourth quarter of the year 2000. "The ISO 9000 series is one of ISO's most successful products, used by tens of thousands of organizations around the world," says ISO President, Prof. Giacomo Elias. "ISO is well aware of the investment it has made in quality systems based on ISO 9000 and we are taking a proactive approach to ensure that their transition to the new, enhanced versions will be a smooth one. | See what

| About Design Review, Design Verification and Design Validation Someone may feel difficult to distinguish the terms "Design Review", "Design Verification" and "Design Validation" in ISO 9001 as they look like similiar. In fact, they can be combined into one step. But in the most cases, it is better to consider them differently. Ref. to ISO 9004-1: 1994, clause 8.4.1, it is clearly stated that Design Review should be "distinguish from a project progress meeting". As ISO 9004-1 is not a standard for certification, I think most of the organization may miss this concept. As stated in ISO 9004-1, the main purposes for the Design Reviews are "identify and anticipate problem areas and inadequacies, and initiate corrective actions". In general, Design Reviews can be performed by the means of discussion, comparisons and auditing. Testing, experiment or demonstration is not a must for Design Review. Although there is no restriction on how many times of Design Review must be done throughout the design process, it is better to perform several Design Reviews at different stages of design than to perform only one Design Review just before releasing the final design. | Are you considering building,

| Certification - the big picture By Felicity Pontoni A new directory published recently reveals the growth of ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 world-wide. The ISO Directory of ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 accreditation and certification bodies lists 573 certification bodies, compared to 309 when the previous edition was published in 1995 - an increase of 264 around the world. The number of countries in which there are certification bodies operating has also increased from 73 to 93. Germany appears to have experienced one of the highest growths: the number of certification bodies active there has increased from 21 to 76. | BDCcan guide you through
