How do ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 affect my IRCA certification?

ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 have recently been updated. Here's how the transition to the 2015 versions affects IRCA's certification and training requirements.

Now that ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 have been updated to the 2015 versions, what training must I complete for certification to these standards?

For ISO 9001:2008, you need to have completed a CQI and IRCA Certified ISO 9001:2008 Auditor Training course.

For ISO 9001:2015 you need to have completed a CQI and IRCA Certified ISO 9001:2015 Auditor Training course or a CQI and IRCA Certified ISO 9001:2008 Auditor Training course and a CQI and IRCA Certified ISO 9001:2015 Auditor Transition Training course.

For ISO 14001:2004, you need to have completed a CQI and IRCA Certified ISO 14001:2004 Auditor Training course.

For ISO 14001:2015 you need to have completed a CQI and IRCA Certified ISO 14001:2015 Auditor Training course or a CQI and IRCA Certified ISO 14001:2004 Auditor Training course and a CQI and CQI and IRCA Certified ISO 14001:2015 Auditor Transition Training course.

All IRCA Certificated QMS and EMS Auditors are required to successfully complete a CQI and IRCA Certified Transition Training to the 2015 versions of the standards on or before 1 September 2018.

Which version of ISO 9001 should I take my training in?

If you are currently auditing systems based on ISO 9001:2008 then we advise you take a training course in ISO 9001:2008. But if you’re already working with ISO 9001:2015 or helping an organisation to prepare for ISO 9001:2015 certification, then we recommend you take an ISO 9001:2015 course. Bear in mind that after September 2018, certification to ISO 9001:2008 will no longer be valid and you will need to be trained in the 2015 version if you wish to remain certificated.

Which version of ISO 14001 should I take my training in?

If you are currently auditing systems based on ISO 14001:2004 then we advise you take a training course in ISO 14001:2004. But if you’re already working with ISO 14001:2015 or helping an organisation to prepare for ISO 14001:2015 certification, then we recommend that you take an ISO 14001:2015 course. Bear in mind that after September 2018, certification to ISO 14001:2004 will no longer be valid and you will need to be trained in the 2015 version if you wish to remain certificated.

Will my audit experience be considered when joining?

Yes – but only for certification to the same version of the standard that the audits were conducted against. For example, if you’ve conducted audits against ISO 9001:2008, we can’t consider those as part of an application for certification to ISO 9001:2015.

Which transition training courses are acceptable?

Only CQI and IRCA Certified Transition Training courses will be accepted for auditors transitioning to the latest versions of the standards. Find out more about CQI and IRCA Certified Transition Training here.
