During most of the '80s I owned a 40-person ad agency here in the Washington, DC area. In 1990 I got out of the agency business and started consulting in marketing. About a year ago I shifted the emphasis in my consulting practice from marketing management to creative thinking because creative thinking is such a strong personal interest. What I mostly do now is conduct corporate offsite retreats, lead corporate and nonprofit creative thinking and problem solving sessions, consult with companies on longer range problems in which I lead their staff to finding their own solutions, and give speeches and keynote addresses. Because of my many many years in the ad agency business, I also direct the Institute of Advanced Advertising Studies at the University of Maryland. It's a program sponsored by the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA) for high-potential young people who are already working in advertising. And I do account management training around the country for groups of AAAA agencies. Because so many of the problems my creative thinking clients want to solve have to do with organizational issues, I've just applied to a masters program at American University in organization development. I'll find out if I'm accepted in the next few weeks. I'd love to exchange ideas on how you work with clients, how you market yourself, new sources for professional growth, books and conferences you've found helpful...whatever. I've recognized at least one other name (Peter de Jager) from the CREA-CPS mailing list I'm on. I've thoroughly enjoyed that list, have met lots of very interesting and helpful people, and hopefully have contributed a little myself. I'm looking forward to some lively discussions. As you can see form my sig, I'm currently an undergratuate (2nd year of 3 @ University of Exeter, UK). On graduation I am planning to apply for management/computer consultancy posts, I'll be 21 then, probably with the larger firms in the UK. General ambitions include getting an MBA type qualification and eventually "going freelance". I'm just off for my Easter Vacation now to do lots of revision for my EOY exams. What I'm interested in really is any information/advice/contacts about going into a consultancy career.
