An engineer who asks the wrong kind of questions becomes an engineering manager. An engineering manager who asks the wrong kind of questions becomes a general manager. A general manager who asks the right kind of questions becomes a consultant. Too true to be funny. I started my public consulting company in 1990, as an aerospace/defense/electronics/information systems veteran, afraid of being labeled with the "scarlet A" of aero- space. It never happened--in the last year my clients have included a chain of nursing homes, a nectarine farm, a group of banks, an HMO, a commercial bakery, a golf course irrigation enterprise, a national research lab, a software developer and a company that makes store fixtures. Variety is great--I'm con- stantly learning new ways to ask questions, and new questions to ask! The PQR Group (Productivity, Quality, Results) is now 4 consult- ants and a loose network of 10 affiliates. We all started con- sulting with a view that Total Quality Management should be Total, and found that many of our clients wanted TQM instant implementation plans, but did not have strategic plans that would create the environment and the imperative for change. Our work is now about equal parts strategic planning, TQM, and product/service development (Quality Function Deployment, Con- current Engineering, advanced creativity and invention tools). Thanks for inviting me to join consulting@quality.org! Ellen Domb, Ph.D. The PQR Group. 190 N. But since it has been a while I'll do it again. I spent 20 years with the Navy in various functions and asignments. The last of which was as a TQL Coordinator and internal consultant. Since leaving the Navy I have been trying and the emphasis is on trying to be a concsultant in the areas of TQ, Team building and Conflict Management. I hope to learn what I may be doing wrong in the aspects of consulting, or problem solving as I like to call it. My interests are in: 1. How do get Clients 2. How do you maintain clients 3. What are the do's and don'ts of consulting I look forward to hearing from the list and giving my limited feedback on ideas when possible. All of my income and activities revolve around being a professional keynote speaker. This generates a certain amount of seminar work and this in turn, a small amount of consulting. For 10 years I worked at Dylex Ltd. A retail holding co. in Canada. During that time I was an Information Centre (IC) Analyst, IC Supervisor, IC Manager, Internal consultant (spent 6 mos in the field selling womens clothing) and finally ended my stay there as Systems Manager for Fairweather, on of their womens clothing divisions. A large part of my marketing is via writing articles. I've had a Management column (thinly disgusied as a technology column) for the past 5 years, and have written for various other journals, magazines, newspapers. My work centres on the management/coping of/with change. Also some creativity work. When I am asked to do 'consulting' it is usually as the role of a facilitator and I draw heavily on the Change/creativity skills. My interest in this maillist is simply to share ideas, do some networking, meet some new associates, have a few friendly arguments etc. etc. Ciao Peter +------------------------------------------------+ / Peter de Jager - Speaker on Change & Creativity \ / pdejager@hookup.net \ / Tel: (905) 792-8706 Fax: (905) 792-9818 \ +----- To embrace the Future... I am one of three founders of a consulting and training company based out of offices in San Francisco and Salt Lake City. EXIS, as the company is known, specializes in process improvement and quality management. Although our clients span a number of different industries, our primary focus is in the high technology industries, including software. Projects vary from change management and ISO 9000, to SEI CMM and Baldrige. I'm particularly keen to exchange information and ideas with any companies using the principles of quality management as a foundation for greater things.
