My name is Alaric Naiman, I live in Boston (but get e-mail via England!), and am an organic chemist currently incarnated as technology/management consultant and change agent. After thirteen frustrating years in industry, achieving greatish things (many of them actually requested by management) and finding none of them used to any purpose at all, I moved into consulting. I find that my clients are much more likely to use what I provide (perhaps because they pay so much for it), thus bringing more joy to all parties concerned. I also admire the rather broader range of learning opportunity that this sub-universe provides. My special interests include communication and leadership, real values work (as distinct from credos and other slogans), and helping people to find their own inner resources. I draw from the worlds of NLP, Zen, and good ol' Cartesian epistemology (whatever its failings, it is at least rigorous). I am currently more successful than I would have thought likely in working cross-culturally (Europe and the Far East); it's fun and humbling to bring Taoist concepts back to Japanese business leaders. My current employer is a technology and management consultancy in Cambridge. We welcome collaboration with others for whom access to a comprehensive command of a broad range of technologies may enable new business opportunities. I personally welcome 'conversation' in almost any area of operations and change that may bring enlightenment and enhanced effectiveness to me and my little corner of the world. Bill Casti, the gracious and generous gentleman to whom we owe the existence of this list recently sent out a request for any outstanding bios. Mine is embedded in the welcome message but it does not appear in the archives, so I've decided to add mine to the public list. I've been a consultant (internal and external) since 1972. I started out as an internal organizational development (OD) consultant in the United States Navy and entered the private sector in 1974 as a training and development consultant. I moved on to general management consulting in the '80s. I've operated a couple of small consulting firms, and had a couple of the large ones as clients of mine (Booz-Allen, and A.T. Kearney). Most of my engagements have stemmed from situations where the client was desperate (yes, I know how that sounds but that's why they hired me), and most have involved training, and performance, process, and productivity improvement. My present position is titled Executive Director, Operations Staff, and I am employed at Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey (ETS is a former client). My most recent assignment involves a far-reaching effort aimed at my company's continued financial viability. My special expertise is GPS -- general problem solving -- and I am the creator of a problem solving methodology known as "solution engineering" (the roots of which I gladly and publicly acknowlege). Having added my bio to the public list, let me now put all you lurkers on notice. I will be asking Bill Casti for a current list of subscribers shortly and I will then compare it with the bios in the archives. If you haven't yet introduced yourself, I encourage you to do so promptly. ============================================================================= Date: Wed, 15 Mar 1995 19:51:54 -0800 From: NeuStar Associates Subject: New Subscriber Delighted to join the group and introduce myself! My name is Mikael Nilsson and I am a PhD student, in Business Administration, at the International Graduate School of Management and Industrial Engineering at Linköping University. The graduate school is a new kind of doctorate programme focusing on the integration of management and industrial engineering. Other objectives are to increase speed so that the doctorate candidates, me and others, finish our dissertations in four years and that the PhDs should go into positions in industry which seldom has been the case historically. My interest in this list is that I feel that the position that I am likely to get after I finish is either in a consultancy or in a bigger company where my role is likely to involve parts very similar to those carried out by a consultant. My licentiate work involves TQM, strategic change, learning organizations and reengineering which I feel can use some of the experiences earned by consultants and maybe use some of the approaches to explain what is going on in the processes it involves. Other areas in which I am interested are intercultural communication, and I have had some research experiences from Japan and studied what it means to run a subsidiary there. Other areas of interest are cultural and international issues of strategy, business and the running of businesses. I really look forward to the discussion. Following 10 years in academia, I have spent 30 to 35 years managing and facilitating process improvement, problem solving, organizational change and now the engineering tools of TQM. My engineering and technical background is in materials science. My professional experience has been in all areas of corporate activity including development, technical customer service, sales, marketing, manufacturing, quality, business planning, aquisitions and mergers, etc., etc., etc. At this point in time I am simply having fun. I guess It's because I am no longer burdened with managing, just teaching -- and always learning. ***************************************************** Name: David T.
