Meet the new Fellow: Natalie Shoemark-Dyer

Progress indicator

Natalie Shoemark-Dyer, CQP FCQI, is the chair of CQI’s Next Generation Network and co-chair of CQI’s Thames Valley branch. She is the head of quality at Aspire Defence Services Limited.

What does becoming a CQI Fellow mean to you?

For me, Fellowship is not only the next professional step but an opportunity to promote the importance of progression to my colleagues and to the next generation of quality professionals. Being part of this membership organisation has given me confidence, leadership skills, networking opportunities and friendships that will last a lifetime.

How did you find the application process?

It was a great opportunity to pull together some of my achievements and the application process gave me the chance to share this with my colleagues on the interview panel. I am fortunate as I have had some great opportunities through my volunteer work, but seeing this all come together is great.

What was the most challenging part of the application process?

The interview. I consider myself quite modest so talking about why I should be awarded Fellow was quite out of the norm. However, I like to push the boundaries and be out of my comfort zone so it was a great experience.

What are the key characteristics of a Fellow?

I think that Fellows are leaders of the profession. They should have integrity, good communication skills and a positive attitude. More importantly, Fellows need to lead the charge in driving the profession forward and help support the CQI in making it sustainable for the future.

What advice would you give members aspiring to become a Fellow?

All membership to the CQI is becoming more and more important as industry begins to recognise the benefits that having a Chartered Quality Professional can bring. Fellowship demonstrates that you will go the extra mile in support of your profession. My advice is to get involved in whatever small way you can as this is what helps make Fellowship achievable.

What advice would you give young quality professionals?

Take every opportunity presented to you, even if you have never done anything like it before or you are terrified by it. Experience can be gained irrespective of age and this is what will set you apart from others. So, have a go at whatever comes your way and use this information to help you work your way through your membership. Having this has paid real dividends in my career.
