Staff profile: Meet the CQI’s professional networks manager

Caroline Whitson joined the CQI’s professional networks team in August 2017. She manages CQI’s volunteers and professional network branches and events. Her aim is to help quality professionals share knowledge and solve problems together.

Describe your current responsibilities and what your role entails

I am responsible for the CQI’s Professional Networks which includes the branches, both nationally and internationally. I also have an overview of volunteering within the CQI and I am looking at how we can develop this within the organisation.

What are the three biggest projects currently on your agenda?

I will be writing a framework for Professional Networks to create a greater understanding of what function the networks carry out. I am also developing measures we can put in place to improve volunteering at the CQI and from this I will be writing a strategy of how these measures will be implemented.

What do members gain by participating in branch events?

Branch events offer our members an interesting and accessible way to gain CPD. Events are also a great way to broaden your professional networks which can be a forum for sharing knowledge and solving problems as well as place to seek advice on your membership and day-to-day work.

Why is advocacy important among CQI members?

It is really important that we promote available opportunities to other CQI members as this strengthens our networks and can raise awareness of the quality profession in many businesses and sectors.

What opportunities are available to help quality professionals be more proactive and strategic in their organisations?

By attending branch events members can meet an array of people from different sectors who can offer advice on exactly this. By creating an understanding of what quality is in your organisation, it can help embed quality principles into the day-to-day work of everyone.

Who is your favourite superhero and why?

Storm from X-Men, mainly because I read a lot of X-Men comics as a kid and I loved the idea of being able to fly. I’m also a real sun lover so being able to control the weather really appealed, especially growing up in Scotland!
