ISO 19011 is updated

Progress indicator

Major revisions for guidelines to effective auditing are here.

ISO 19011:2018, the definitive guide for how to audit management systems, was published on 3 July 2018. The standard offers a synchronised approach for effective auditing across multiple systems at the same time. Designed to be sector-agnostic, it can be applied to any management system regardless of the organisation’s industry, size or the maturity of its management system.

The updated standard aims to address changes in the marketplace, emerging technology, as well as other management systems that have recently been revised or published. Key changes to the new edition include the expansion of competence requirements for auditors; updated guidance on auditing context, leadership and commitment, virtual audits and supply chain; and removal of discipline and sector-specific competence requirements for auditors.

“Other key changes in the 2018 version include the addition of a risk-based approach to the principles of auditing to reflect the enhanced focus on risk in both management standards and in the marketplace,” Denise Robitaille, Chair of the ISO project committee behind the revised standard, said in a press release.

“There are tips on auditing risks and opportunities as well as information on applying risk-based thinking to the audit process. In addition, guidance has been expanded in a number of areas such as managing an audit programme and conducting an audit.”

Given the significant changes to the new version, Approved Training Partners (ATPs) are being asked to update all of their training courses to the revised standard.

The CQI|IRCA will also be releasing a report entitled ISO 19011:2018 Understanding the International Standard. Look out for it in the coming days.
