RepRisk highlights most controversial companies in 2017

Progress indicator

Swiss research organisation unveils the cost of severe governance issues to reputations.

In The Most Controversial Companies report, RepRisk reveals companies that were most exposed to environmental, social and governance (ESG) and business conduct risks in 2017. The report aims to demonstrate how exposure to such risks can cause reputational damage, or legal and financial challenges.

“The latest issue of our MCC Report shows that 2017 may be considered as a year when the tide started to turn against corporate corruption,” Philipp Aeby, CEO of RepRisk, said in a statement.

The Weinstein Company suffered the biggest damage to its reputation due to sexual abuse allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein. RepRisk says the company’s top ESG issues are: poor employment conditions; human rights abuses and corporate complicity; corruption, bribery, extortion and money laundering; and fraud.

Kobe Steel Ltd, which faced allegations of falsified data, ranked second on the list. The company’s top ESG issues include: fraud, health and environmental issues with its products, global pollution and tax evasion.

J&F Investimentos SA ranked third on the list. The private investment company faced allegations of widespread corruption, and a meat scandal that was identified by Brazil’s Inland Revenue Agency and Brazilian Federal Police. The top ESG issues listed for the company are: corruption, bribery, extortion and money laundering; fraud, anti-competitive practices; tax evasion; and health and environmental issues with its products.
