Volunteer in focus: Geoff Edmondson

A huge supporter of the CQI and the quality profession, Geoff Edmondson CQP FCQI, has been a CQI volunteer throughout most of his career.

Geoff's journey

Geoff Edmondson CQP FCQI, became a member of what was then known as the IQA in 1982. He began volunteering in 1987 as a member of the IQA Cumbria Group. “The Group was linked to the old Lancashire Branch and as membership grew it became the Cumbria Branch in 1988”, Geoff writes.

During his time at the Cumbria branch, Geoff promoted the CQI and the quality profession; encouraging professionals to develop their skills, gain recognition and broaden their career prospects.

Geoff took on the role of branch secretary in 1990 and in 2006 also became the branch  treasurer.

Having established himself at branch level, he represented the Cumbria Branch on the Northern Regional Advisory Committee from 1990 to 2007, serving as secretary from 1990 to 2003.

In 1996 Geoff became a founder member of the IQA Regional Representatives Panel representing the Northern Region and chaired the panel from 1999 to 2004.

The start of NucSIG

In 2007, Geoff and Mike  Underwood  accepted  a challenge from the CQI  to form a group to represent members in the nuclear industry.

“This we did, the Nuclear Special Interest Group (NucSIG) became one of the first SIGs.”  Geoff chaired the  Nuc SIG  from 2007 to 2013, leaving a strong legacy of developing the capability of quality professionals within the nuclear industry.

We were able to make significant achievements for the quality profession in the nuclear industry,

Geoff Edmondson CQP FCQI

“My time as chair was very rewarding and through the efforts of an enthusiastic and committed steering  group, we were able to make significant achievements for the quality profession in the nuclear industry, including the development and publication of the first issue of the Nuclear Quality Knowledge document; a successful annual programme of regional professional development and networking events and growing the membership to over 300.”

Continuing his commitment to the quality profession, Geoff became involved with The Membership Panel, Qualification Board and Professional Policy Board. He is a volunteer that completely immersed himself in all corners of the organisation. Working to build the influence of quality in industry and supporting other members in their journey. “My involvement at branch, regional and national levels provided many opportunities for networking and sharing knowledge and experiences with other quality professionals. I would recommend anyone to become involved in volunteering. I found it personally rewarding and it does count towards CPD.”

33 years later

After 33 years, Geoff continues to volunteer and remains a member of the Cumbria Branch committee. He has been a valued anchor of the branch, the Chair, Kevin Taylor CQP MCQI testifies:

'Without Geoff, aka Mr CQI Cumbria, there is absolutely no doubt that the Cumbria branch of the CQI would have folded. As a relative newcomer to the committee and the new Chair of the branch I can honestly say that Geoff has made all this easier as I often call upon his immense knowledge and experience of everything and anything CQI (branch or nationally).

We are losing an immensely valuable secretary, but truly thankful Geoff is remaining on the committee to offer his insight and support us.

Kevin Taylor CQP MCQI, Chair of the Cumbria Branch committee

Thank you, Geoff, from me, the committee and all the members!'

Thank you for your amazing show of dedication Geoff, you have been key in growing the Cumbria region to new heights during your tenure. Your value is incalculable, and you leave behind a strong legacy at the Cumbria branch.
