How volunteering as a member has supported my quality career

Published:

Susan Samaroo CQP MCQI, QHSE Manager - Precision NDT LLC, explains why her work as a volunteer with the CQI’s Caribbean branch has been invaluable to her quality career.

Volunteering at a CQI Caribbean Branch has been a transformative experience for me. It has positively impacted me in a number of ways, both personally and professionally. In this article, I will discuss some of the ways in which volunteering at a Quality Committee has impacted me and how it has helped me grow and develop as an individual.

Offering my time at the CQI Caribbean Branch has helped me develop my leadership skills. As a member of the committee, I was given the opportunity to take on a leadership role, which allowed me to develop my skills in this area. I was responsible for leading some tasks, committing to actions while evidencing my commitment, and working with others to achieve common goals. This experience has helped me become more confident in my ability to lead others and has given me the skills I need to be an effective leader in other areas of my life.

Developing transferable skills

Volunteering has also helped me develop my communication skills – essential in my professional life. As a member of the committee, I was required to communicate with a wide range of people, including other committee members, stakeholders, and members of the public. This experience helped me become more comfortable communicating with others and has given me the skills I need to effectively convey my ideas and opinions.

It has also helped me develop my problem-solving skills. As a member of the committee, I was required to work with others to identify and solve problems related to quality control. This experience has helped me become more skilled at identifying problems, analysing them and finding solutions.

Developing my teamwork skills has been another benefit of volunteering. Having gained valuable experience by work closely with others on the committee to achieve common goals, this experience has helped me become more skilled at working with others, and has given me the skills I need to be an effective team player in other areas of my life.

I have also gained a greater appreciation for the importance of quality control. Before volunteering at the committee, I had a basic understanding of quality control, but I did not fully appreciate its importance. Through my work on the committee, I have come to understand just how important this is in ensuring that products and services meet the needs of consumers, as quality control is a key component of many industries.

Giving back as a volunteer

An unexpected benefit has been a greater appreciation of the value of volunteering. Before volunteering at the committee, I had not been involved in any volunteer work. I have now come to appreciate just how valuable volunteer work can be, both for the individuals involved and for the wider community. This has motivated me to become more involved in volunteer work and to seek out other opportunities to give back to my network.

Finally, volunteering at a Quality Committee has helped me develop a sense of purpose and fulfilment. Through my work on the committee, I have been able to make a positive contribution to my network and to the wider world. This has given me a sense of purpose and fulfilment that I had not experienced before. It has also helped me to develop a greater sense of empathy and compassion for others, which has been invaluable in my personal and professional life.
