The CQI commissions Cranfield University to undertake new research

The Chartered Quality Institute (CQI) is pleased to announce it has commissioned Cranfield University to deliver a new research project on the value of quality management. The project will explore the relationship between Total Quality Management (TQM) and modern business outcomes.

It intends to support the CQI in developing a comprehensive framework intended to clearly articulate and demonstrate the business value of quality management, positioning it as a strategic asset within organisations.

The study will involve a thorough review of existing research and case studies across a range of sectors to understand how TQM influences business performance. It will identify key performance indicators (KPIs) that reflect the contribution of quality management to success in areas such as risk management, operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

This project is an important step towards providing quality professionals with the tools and evidence they need to engage with senior leadership and demonstrate the strategic value of quality management. As organisations navigate increasingly complex global challenges, understanding how quality drives not just operational improvements but broader strategic success is more important than ever.

The research will consider emerging trends such as the impact of quality management on the achievement of sustainability goals and explore how digital technologies are reshaping quality (Quality 4.0).

The CQI plans to publish a summary of the findings in early summer 2025.
