What inspired your unique path into the world of quality?

When I completed my A-Levels, I found myself at a crossroads. College hadn't provided the practical, hands-on experience I wanted, and I knew that I wanted to take a different path. The idea of an apprenticeship immediately appealed to me because it combined practical work with continued learning. After some research, I learned that BAM Nuttall had a strong reputation for developing apprentices, and I was drawn to the potential for growth and the opportunities they offered.

Among the various apprenticeship options available, it was Quality that truly took my interest. The role focus on ensuring high standards and continuous improvement on a complex project intrigued me. I recognised that a career in Quality would not only allow me to be part of large-scale, impactful work but also challenge me to develop a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of processes.

After applying for the apprenticeship, I went through several rounds of interviews, each one solidifying my desire to pursue a career in Quality. I was thrilled when I was offered the position, and soon after, I moved to Lancashire to join the team working on the Transpennine Route Upgrade (West Alliance). This multi-billion-pound rail infrastructure project is designed to enhance connectivity and capacity in the North of England, and being part of such a significant endeavour has been incredibly rewarding.

Can you share a pivotal experience that shaped your early career in quality?

Throughout my apprenticeship, I had the opportunity to shadow experienced Quality Engineers, learning firsthand the importance of maintaining high standards in every aspect of a project. These mentors played a crucial role in my development, providing guidance and sharing their wealth of knowledge. I also enrolled in the Level 4 Quality Practitioner Programme with Capella Associates, which gave me a solid foundation in quality management principles and practices.

Choosing Quality as my career path has been one of the best decisions I've made. It has given me the opportunity to contribute to a project that will have a lasting impact on the region, while also equipping me with the skills and knowledge to ensure that the highest standards are met. The support and development opportunities provided by BAM Nuttall have been instrumental in my journey, and I am excited to continue growing within the field of Quality.

This experience has solidified my commitment to a career in Quality, and I am eager to continue developing my expertise and contributing to the delivery of high-quality infrastructure projects.

How has your dedication to quality evolved throughout your professional journey?

After I completed my Level 4 Quality Practitioner Programme through Capella Associates, I felt a strong desire to continue advancing my career in Quality. Over the course of two years, the training and hands-on experience I gained solidified my passion for the field and deepened my understanding of quality management principles.

What was the driving force behind pursuing a higher level of professional recognition?

With this foundation in place, I decided to apply for Practitioner-level membership with the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI). Pursuing CQI Practitioner status was a natural next step for me because it offered the opportunity to gain further knowledge and expertise in Quality, while also aligning my professional development with industry-recognised standards. I saw it as a way to enhance my skills, expand my professional network, and stay informed about the latest developments in the field.
In what ways has advancing your quality expertise empowered you professionally?

Attaining CQI Practitioner status has provided me with a broader perspective on Quality, enabling me to contribute more effectively to projects and drive continuous improvement within my team. It has also reinforced my commitment to maintaining high standards in every aspect of my work and has motivated me to continue striving for excellence in my career.
