As part of a series of articles on different quality qualifications, Weronika Stepien, a Business Development Executive at Haughton Design, outlines her experience of undertaking the Level 4 Quality Practitioner apprenticeship, studying with Six Pillars Consulting.

Q: How did you first hear about quality as a job?

A: I never realised quality was a profession until I joined Sainsbury’s Argos in 2018. Then I saw the importance of quality assurance and the consequences of not following product requirements. I saw how important quality is as a stand-alone function, especially in large retail businesses.

Q: What was your first quality role?

A: At Sainsbury’s Argos, as an assistant product technologist. I helped with product development while ensuring products were safe and legal. It was a really exciting role, especially as it was not long after I graduated from Sheffield Hallam, where I earned a First-class Master’s in Product Design.

Q: Why did you decide to undertake further learning?

A: I thought it would be beneficial to broaden my knowledge of quality. I was hoping to meet other people in similar professions so we could discuss and compare quality in our own sectors. I have always enjoyed personal development and think investing in growing yourself is the best type of investment.

Q: Why did you choose this qualification?

A: It was suggested to me by a colleague, and I thought it sounded interesting.

Q: What objectives and outcomes did you hope to achieve, and has it met your expectations?

A: It exceeded my expectations. It pushed me to think about the wider picture and to have a better, deeper understanding of things. Also, it made me realise how quality is everywhere and how important it is for any business to be constantly promoting best quality. I don’t mean just products of the best quality, but also the service, whether that is in-store or over the phone. It is sometimes overseen how the service and the experience that comes with the product is just as important as the product itself.

Q: What were the key highlights of what you learned?

A: Understanding that quality is everywhere – and its importance. I have also done a lot of additional reading for the course, and found the recommended reading books helped me further develop personally, as well as in my profession.

Q: How has this qualification impacted on you and your work?

A: In terms of work, I have got involved in projects that I probably would not have done if I was not doing the qualification. Qualifications such as this one push you to come out of your comfort zone and work on bigger projects, get involved with other departments, and work with people who you would not work with usually.

It is great for personal development, too. Because you are pushing yourself, you gain confidence and are more willing to take on new challenges. It is really good; I would genuinely recommend this to anyone interested.

Q: What advice would you give others who are considering doing this qualification?

A: Go for it. If you are considering it, it means something has already drawn you towards it. I think you will regret it if you do not do it.
