As part of a series of articles on different quality qualifications, Massimo Narna, who works in product assurance at the European Space Agency (ESA), describes his experience of achieving an MSc in Quality Management at the University of the West of Scotland.

Q: What qualification did you undertake?

A: I obtained my Master’s degree in Quality Management from the University of the West of Scotland (UWS). This programme provided me with an in-depth understanding of quality principles, methodologies and their practical applications, enhancing my skills and keeping me up to date with the latest quality management practices.

The degree provided me with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the unique challenges of quality management in the aerospace industry in which I operate. Through rigorous courses and hands-on projects, I improved my knowledge of quality methodologies, risk assessment strategies and leadership principles.

In addition, the programme provided networking opportunities with industry professionals and collaborative research projects, further enhancing my professional skills and broadening my perspective on quality management in aerospace.

Q: How did you first hear about quality as a job?

A: My first encounter with quality management as a profession came when I was assigned the role of a quality assurance (QA) professional to produce space satellite structure subsystem, specifically carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) parts manufacturing.

This role involved conducting quality inspections and ensuring compliance with aerospace standards, sparking an interest in quality management as a career path for me. Witnessing the meticulous processes required for product integrity and safety made me appreciate the vital role of quality assurance in projects.

This early exposure fuelled my passion for maintaining excellence in aerospace companies and led me to explore various roles in the field of quality management.

Q: What was your first quality role?

A: My journey in quality management began in the aerospace industry, where I assumed the role of a Quality Assurance (QA) professional overseeing space projects. In addition to implementing rigorous quality control measures, I undertook tasks typical of a QA manager, including audits, quality data analysis, staff training, and supplier coordination to ensure regulatory compliance.

I also conducted inspections on products and processes to ensure they met required quality standards and specifications. This pivotal role provided me with practical experience in aerospace-specific quality management methodologies, paving the way for further career progression into managerial positions overseeing complete aerospace projects such as satellites, satellite constellations, and, more recently, launch vehicles.

Q: Why did you decide to undertake further learning?

A: Motivated by the desire to deepen my skills and best practices in quality management, I made a strategic decision to invest in myself and pursue advanced education to enhance my capabilities and remain current on emerging trends in quality management. Recognising the importance of continuous learning in maintaining competitiveness, I sought to position myself as an industry expert through advanced training in quality management.
